Video Summary
Dr. Sean Smith, an associate professor and the medical director of Michigan Medicine's Cancer Rehabilitation Program, presented his work on developing a patient-reported outcome measure for cancer rehabilitation. Dr. Smith and his team wanted to address the lack of an effective outcome measure in this field. They used a modified Delphi method to come up with the domains they wanted to measure, including gross motor function, upper extremity function, fatigue, and social participation. They then used existing items from the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy and PROMIS to create a questionnaire. They tested this questionnaire in six different cancer rehabilitation clinics and analyzed the data. They found that some of the items performed better than others and were able to refine the questionnaire down to 12 items. This process allowed them to create a patient-reported outcome measure that can be used to assess function in cancer rehabilitation patients. The next step for Dr. Smith and his team is to work on multi-center research and to seek funding opportunities. Overall, this work highlights the importance of research and the need for standardized outcome measures to demonstrate the value of rehabilitation interventions.
