Pdf Summary
A pilot study was conducted to assess the short-term effects of intraarticular corticosteroid injections (ICSI) on serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels in male veterans. Thirty male veterans received ultrasound-guided glenohumeral joint injections using triamcinolone acetonide. Serum hormone levels and pain and disability scores were measured at baseline, 1 week, and 4 weeks post-injection.

The study found that serum testosterone levels decreased significantly at 1 week post-injection, but recovered to near baseline levels by 4 weeks. There was a transient suppression of the male gonadal axis following the injection. LH levels also showed a significant reduction at 1 week, but did not change significantly at 4 weeks. FSH levels did not change significantly at either time point.

Pain and disability scores, as measured by the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), showed significant improvement at 1 and 4 weeks post-injection. The injections were effective in reducing shoulder pain and disability.

The study highlights the potential short-term effects of ICSI on the male reproductive axis. Further research is needed to evaluate the long-term effects of multiple injections or higher corticosteroid doses on male reproductive function.

Overall, the study provides insight into the systemic effects of intraarticular corticosteroid injections on hormone levels in male veterans and emphasizes the need for further research in this area.
