Pdf Summary
The study compares the utilization of outpatient rehabilitation services between individuals with violence-related spinal cord injuries (SCI) and those with nonviolent traumatic SCI. Individuals with violence-related SCI had fewer follow-up appointments with physical medicine & rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians and other therapists compared to the control group. They also had higher rates of missed appointments, indicating potential barriers to care. Factors such as insurance, transportation access, and socioeconomic status may contribute to these differences. The study suggests that interventions are needed to improve access to care for individuals with violence-related SCI to optimize long-term outcomes. The study highlights the importance of understanding and addressing barriers to outpatient rehabilitation care in vulnerable populations with SCI. The findings advocate for tailored interventions, such as care navigators and telehealth services, to support individuals with violence-related SCI in accessing necessary rehabilitation services for better outcomes. Areas for future research include examining the impact of hospital-based violence intervention programs and understanding patient perspectives on barriers to outpatient care. The study underscores the need for effective, accessible, and highly utilized interventions to improve outcomes in individuals with violence-related SCI.
