Pdf Summary
The study aimed to determine the prevalence of rapidly progressive osteoarthritis of the hip (RPOH) following intra-articular steroid injections and to compare baseline characteristics between patients with and without RPOH. A total of 924 patients who received intra-articular hip steroid/anesthetic injections and had available pre- and post-injection imaging were included in the study. The review of imaging revealed 26 cases of RPOH, resulting in an overall prevalence of 2.8%. Patients with RPOH were significantly older and had a shorter duration of symptoms prior to their injections compared to those without RPOH. Regression analysis showed that age was associated with greater odds of RPOH. The study suggests that the prevalence of RPOH following intra-articular hip steroid injections is lower than previously reported but still clinically relevant. This information should be taken into consideration when counseling patients prior to these injections. The study also highlights the need for further research to understand the relationship between intra-articular injections and RPOH and to assess the safety of these injections.
