Video Summary
This session covered strategies for applying to PM&R residency, with a focus on away rotations, letters of recommendation, signaling, interviews, rank lists, and preparation for MS1–MS2 students.

Panelists emphasized that away rotations can be highly valuable, especially for borderline applicants, because they let programs see you in person and can lead to interviews and strong letters. However, aways can also hurt applicants if professionalism is lacking, so students should be punctual, teachable, collaborative, and prepared with basic medical knowledge and a solid understanding of PM&R fundamentals.

For letters of recommendation, the panel favored a mix of PM&R and non-PM&R letters. Strong internal medicine letters were especially appreciated because PM&R still involves a lot of medicine. The new standardized letter of evaluation was presented as a useful holistic tool.

On program types, the panel compared categorical and advanced PM&R residencies. They advised students to think carefully about intern-year training, since PM&R patients are medically complex. Strong medicine or ICU exposure during intern year was viewed as especially helpful.

Interview advice included preparing a concise “tell me about yourself” response, using the STAR method, and building a few key stories that can be adapted to many questions. Applicants were encouraged to research each program, keep notes on impressions, and be authentic.

The discussion also highlighted the recent change to 20 signals. Signals are now seen as highly important, so applicants should use them strategically and honestly, especially when explaining geographic interest.

Finally, the panel advised MS1s and MS2s to seek early exposure through PM&R interest groups, shadowing, and research, while still building a strong overall medical foundation.
