Focused Review Course: Stroke
Description

This focused review on the topic of stroke is divided into 7 sections:

  • Definitions and Risk Factors (15 minutes)
  • Brain stem stroke syndromes (13 minutes)
  • Acute treatment (15 minutes)
  • Rehabilitation (12 minutes)
  • Emerging technologies (10 minutes)
  • Stroke side effects (15 minutes)
  • Stroke side effects, part 2 (12 minutes)

Learning Objectives
After completing this enduring material, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand stroke risk factors, both modifiable and non-modifiable
  • Identify the clinical characteristics of the most commonly encountered strokes including those involving cerebral arteries as well as cerebellar strokes and brainstem stroke syndromes
  • Describe an appropriate stroke etiologic work-up for a patient who has been admitted to your inpatient rehabilitation unit in order to be sure that it has been completed sufficiently
  • Recognize the major theories of rehabilitation (including motor) recovery post-stroke
  • Identify emerging technologies and approaches used in stroke rehabilitation
  • Determine the cause of shoulder pain in your stroke patient in your outpatient clinic post-acute care
  • Design a dysphagia evaluation and management program for your local hospital to improve quality of life and decrease aspiration pneumonia rates and readmission rates at your affiliated hospital
  • Determine the types of aphasia your patients have on your stroke unit
  • Facilitate the return to work for your stroke outpatient with cognitive impairment/dysfunction
