Description

This session will examine the effects of climate change on people with disabilities and the role of PM&R in disaster preparedness to mitigate these effects. Rising temperatures, rising tides, extreme droughts and weather events leave people with disabilities (PwDs) highly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change. Climate emergencies leave PwDs with disproportionately higher rates of morbidity and mortality due to decreased access to support, emergency relief operations, and basic health and other services. Disaster response strategies require the involvement of rehabilitation medicine at all phases of the disaster management continuum to address the needs of PwDs during these emergencies. Our session will review these issues to understand the barriers people with disabilities experience and identify opportunities for physiatry's involvement as we face the biggest public health concern of the 21st century 

Learning Objectives

• Understand the effects of climate change on people with disabilities
• Examine how disaster preparedness can mitigate the effects of climate change on PwDs
• Identify strategies to incorporate physiatry to address climate change, and improve disaster preparedness
• Discuss current opportunities for involvement as physiatrists or physiatrists in training to help combat climate change and to be involved in disaster responses
