Member May: Breathtaking Advances: Utility of Ultrasound in SCI Ventilator Management
Description

Description
This session highlights the evolving role of ultrasound in the evaluation and management of individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI), emphasizing its potential to address limitations in current diagnostic methods. The discussion will include the drawbacks of traditional approaches such as NCS/EMG and the advantages of ultrasound for respiratory function assessment, ventilator weaning evaluation, and candidacy for diaphragmatic pacers. Attendees will also explore innovative models for integrating ultrasound into clinical practice and potential avenues for future research. With presentations by Dr. Adewuyi, Dr. Franz, Dr. Bhatia, and Dr. Stone, this session will provide a comprehensive overview of current uses, limitations, and emerging opportunities for ultrasound technology in SCI care.

Learing Objectives
Learning Objective 1: Describe the limitations of current evaluation methods, including NCS/EMG, in assessing respiratory function and nerve activity in individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI).
Learning Objective 2: Explain why ultrasound is an effective diagnostic tool in SCI care, particularly for evaluating ventilator weaning and assessing diaphragmatic pacer candidacy.
Learning Objective 3:Identify key clinical applications and benefits of using ultrasound for evaluating respiratory function and other SCI-related complications.
Learning Objective 4: Demonstrate how ultrasound can be integrated into clinical practice, using real-world models and examples provided by experts in the field.
Learning Objective 5: Evaluate potential avenues for further research and technological advancements in ultrasound for spinal cord injury care.
