Description
Brain Injury Medicine providers routinely prescribe medications to address various acute and chronic sequelae. Providers attempting to optimize treatment regimens in this vulnerable population often use medications that are off-label or which have not been studied extensively in brain injury. Results of newer or small studies may not yet be widely known in the field.
This session will try to fill in that knowledge gap. Faculty members will discuss common problems, with potential medication treatments, through a discussion of cases. The faculty will also present didactic-style information about pertinent updates in this topic area. The panel will discuss points in the cases where they might choose different medications. This interactive session will allow participants to ask questions and provide comments.
The overall goal of these conversations will be for learners to review best practices for medication management for sequalae of brain injury. Specific clinical situations to be addressed include: paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity, agitation, disordered consciousness, and behavioral dysregulation. Discussion about rationales for medication choices will include information about potential neurotransmitter derangements and implications for treatment. Speakers will present a review of classic and recent literature as we try to move toward use of best practices in this important part of our field.
Learning Objectives
- Learning Objective 1: Describe common neurotransmitter derangements that occur during recovery from brain injury.
- Learning Objective 2: Discuss best practice for medication options for common problems seen in brain injury rehabilitation.
- Learning Objective 3: Demonstrate ability to list appropriate medication choices for common brain injury sequelae.
