During this session, we will look to teach the attendees about cultural humility and competency and demonstrate how this is applied in the clinical setting by completing cases of patients whose English language proficiency is limited. We will discuss some common stereotypes and identify do’s and don’t when working with patients that have limited English language proficiency and an interpreter is needed.

 

Learning Objectives

After completing this live activity, the participant should be able to:

 

  • Discuss some demographic data and highlight the importance of this topic
  • Define Cultural Humility and Cultural Competency and describe the differences between the two
  • Address common practices and misconceptions regarding Hispanic Culture and Healthcare
  • Identify Do’s and Dont’s when working with a Spanish speaking patient
  • Provide some tips on how to prepare and perform your first encounter with a Spanish speaking patient
