AAPM&R National Grand Rounds: No Surprises Act: Three Things You Need to Know Now about Surprise Billing
Description

Faculty

Vice President, Health Care Payment and Delivery Reform

To address years of concern over “surprise billing,” Congress enacted new balance billing patient protections under the No Surprises Act. In addition to the patient protections, the law placed new obligations on providers and hospitals (as well as health plans). These provisions became effective this year. While many people think of patients receiving “surprise bills” as only related to emergency and ancillary services, several provisions of the new law will also apply to PM&R physicians in certain circumstances.   To help you navigate the new requirements, we invite you view this National Grandround to learn more about:

  • What you are required to provide patients in the way of patient disclosures
  • When patients can consent to waive their balance billing protections and what role the physiatrist plays in providing a related notice
  • When you are required to provide a good faith estimate to a patient and what to do when it does

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize topics of broad or in-depth focus that physiatrists of all specializations need to apply to their practice
  • Discuss the latest evidence, research and best practices within the physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) field
  • Define and use current techniques, procedures and research to improve physician practice and quality of patient care
