Member May: Hot Topics in Global PM&R: Discussion and Networking for the IRGH Community (1.25 CME)
Description

Description

The International Rehab and Global Health Community will bring a dynamic discussion and networking event for this year's Member May Session. This session will dive into some of the most pressing and thought-provoking topics in international rehabilitation, fostering critical dialogue and collaboration among professionals passionate about global physiatry. Topics will include:  1. Decolonizing global PM&R -- challenging traditional power structures and fostering more equitable partnerships, ethical engagement in global health, and shifting towards locally driven leadership in rehabilitation efforts. What can we learn from cross-cultural perspectives on disability and rehabilitation, and how do these insights shape patient-centered care? 2. Evolution of global rehabilitation education and training -- addressing how curricula can better reflect diverse, international needs while equipping the next generation of physiatrists, with particular focus on the role of artificial intelligence and its influence on reshaping global rehabilitation, access, and innovation.

Our session will also have a safe space for discussion with regards to current US policies and international relations and the impact on rehabilitation initiatives abroad, medical missions, funding, and partnerships in global health. Whether you're a seasoned global health practitioner or newly engaged in international rehab, this session offers a space to exchange ideas, build connections, and spark meaningful change in the field.

Learning Objectives

  • Learning Objective 1: Critically examine the concept of decolonizing global PM&R by identifying key principles, challenges, and strategies for fostering equitable partnerships and locally led rehabilitation initiatives.
  • Learning Objective 2: Explore cross-cultural perspectives on disability and rehabilitation to better understand how social, cultural, and historical contexts shape care delivery and patient experiences globally.
  • Learning Objective 3: Identify strategies to improve global rehabilitation education and training programs that align with local health needs, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and empower the next generation of international rehab professionals.
  • Learning Objective 4: Explore Technological Innovations: Evaluate the role of artificial intelligence in expanding access to rehabilitation services in resource-limited settings, while addressing ethical considerations and potential disparities.
  • Learning Objective 5: Analyze Policy Impacts on Medical Missions: Understand the implications of current U.S. administration policies on international medical missions, including visa regulations, funding restrictions, and global partnerships.
