To address years of concern over “surprise billing,” Congress enacted new balance billing patient protections under the No Surprises Act. In addition to the patient protections, the law placed new obligations on providers and hospitals (as well as health plans). These provisions became effective this year. While many people think of patients receiving “surprise bills” as only related to emergency and ancillary services, several provisions of the new law will also apply to PM&R physicians in certain circumstances.
